David Moyes has revealed what a fan said to him about West Ham United’s Conference League win after their 5-2 defeat against Crystal Palace (21 April).

With the news that the Scot is departing the London Stadium, the manager received his Hammers send-off against Luton Town on Saturday (11 May).

Now speaking exclusively to The Standard (16 May), Moyes has revealed one fan interaction which stayed with and hurt him.

He said: “One of the most disappointing things was after our game at Crystal Palace recently.

“We had lost heavily but afterwards I decided to go out and sign a few autographs – just thought it was the right thing to do.

“I was standing there and a West Ham supporter came up and said to me, ‘That trophy meant nothing. We only beat two teams, Alkmaar and Fiorentina’.

“I told him he was entitled to his opinion but that really bugged me. That fan who thought it was ‘nothing’ has his opinion but I can tell him that I have had supporters from many other clubs telling me they think West Ham have done amazing.”

How good has David Moyes been for West Ham United?

The Conference League win is a night in Prague that Hammers fans will never forget as long as they live.

Looking at Aston Villa’s attempt to win the competition, they were smashed 6-2 on aggregate in the semi-final against Olympiacos.

This has eased any suggestions that the Conference is easy to win and that English sides should always win it, as the Hammers are the only side to do so.

It is fair to say that this is the peak point of Moyes’ tenure at the London Stadium despite plenty of other achievements.

There is no doubt that keeping West Ham in the Premier League in his first season was an impressive feat on its own.

He has since carried them up the league to consistent European qualification finishes which had been unheard of for the club.

His successor in the dugout of the London Stadium has a lot to live up to given the success that Moyes has had in his time with the club.
