Eddie Howe wants Newcastle stars to put in performance they owe themselves after Bournemouth loss

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe wants his players to erase memories of AFC Bournemouth by putting together a performance against Chelsea that reflects his two-year stint as boss on Tyneside

Howe stated that he took on "responsibility" himself for the defeat at his old club but insists his players must live up to the standards they have set themselves since November 2021 when he was first appointed. Howe refused to use injuries as an excuse but knows that regardless of what team he puts out there should be more of a response from his Toon stars.

Howe said: "Over the past two years we have prided ourselves on delivering a Newcastle performance. That wasn't there at Bournemouth. Every phase of the game, it wasn't there.

"I've been in this position before but you can't hide from it or run from it. We need to make sure we regroup and come back."

Newcastle now head into a crunch run of fixtures in the Premier League, Europe and on the domestic front. But Howe, admirably, started with a look at his own performance after Bournemouth.

United had gone into the game having rested Miguel Almiron over in Dortmund for the 2-0 Champions League loss. But he still picked up an injury. Howe added: "We weren't there physically or mentally and I have to take on responsibility for that of course."
