Ollie Watkins just proved Jurgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard right after bold Liverpool comparison

Ollie Watkins has certainly turned himself into an England hero, although he already had a couple of pretty big admirers in the form of two Liverpool legends.

The Aston Villa striker sent the Three Lions into the final of Euro 2024 with his last-gasp goal against the Netherlands. After Harry Kane’s controversial penalty had brought England level after Xavi Simons’ opener, it had looked as though the game was heading to extra-time.

Watkins though showed his class with a superb strike as the clock ticked over the 90-minute mark, confirming England’s place in Sunday’s final in Berlin, where they will meet Spain.

The 28-year-old already had his fair share of admirers before tonight, including both Steven Gerrard and Jurgen Klopp. The pair have spoken glowingly of him in the past.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard of course worked with Watkins during his time in charge of Villa, and paid him the ultimate compliment by comparing him to one of the Reds’ best strikers of the Premier League era.

"I picture Ollie Watkins at his best when he's really front-footed, aggressive with that bit between his teeth," said Gerrard.

"He is a lovely player on the eye with the goals he scores and his technical ability. He reminds me in a lot of ways, in terms of his profile and how he goes about it, of a player I played with – Fernando Torres."

Klopp was equally effusive when speaking about Watkins back in 2021, just months after the forward had struck a perfect hat-trick in Aston Villa’s famous 7-2 win over Liverpool.

“Ollie is a really, really talented striker. Obviously the manager knew him from before and it was a really good signing. The whole Brentford attacking line was exceptional in the Championship season before.

"So that suits really well, he's physically strong so he can keep the ball, he can jump high, he is very fast – that's a good package.

"Nobody has to remind me how good he is but how we always try to defend strikers, we try to avoid passes into their area. With him, that's not different than it is to others."

Liverpool.com says: Watkins has been a superb striker for a good while now – you don’t get praise like that from Klopp and Gerrard unless you are. It’s no surprise then that he’s been linked with Liverpool, although he’d almost certainly prove too expensive for the Reds, especially after tonight.
