Behind Ollie Watkins' secret chat with Cole Palmer that sparked England Euro 2024 win

Ollie Watkins has revealed the match-winning conversation he had with Three Lions team-mate Cole Palmer when they came on off the bench in England's dramatic 2-1 victory over the Netherlands.

Gareth Southgate's side booked their place in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday where they will face off against Spain, who have arguably been the best team in the entire tournament. The Three Lions and the Dutch traded goals in the first half, with Xavi Simons wondrous strike cancelled out by Harry Kane's controversial penalty.

The game looked to be heading for extra-time, with England set for another nervy 30 minutes in Dortmund. But then, with just a minute left of added on time, super sub Watkins got onto the end of a Palmer through ball in the Netherlands box, producing a stunning strike into the bottom corner past Bart Verbruggen to send the England support both in Germany and at home wild.

And the Aston Villa forward has revealed he and Palmer manifested England's goal, with Watkins telling Palmer he would assist him prior to them coming on off the bench for Harry Kane and Phil Foden. "I've been waiting for that moment for weeks," Watkins told ITV. "It’s taken a lot of hard work to get where I am today, grateful that I got the opportunity and I grabbed it with both hands. I’m delighted.

He then added: "I swear on my life, I swear on my kids’ life, I said to Cole Palmer, we’re coming on and you’re going to set me up today. And that’s why I was so happy. I knew as soon as he got the ball he was going to play me and then you’ve got to be greedy: touch and finish. And when I seen it go in the bottom corner… oh my life. Best feeling ever."

Buy England's Euro 2024 kit

The Three Lions are among the favourites to win this summer's Euro 2024 tournament and you can get your hands on the brand new Nike home and away kits before the first whistle.

It has not been the easiest of tournaments for England, but somehow, they are through to a second consecutive European Championship final. However, despite a string of poor performances and a penalty shoot-out win over Switzerland, England produced their best performance of Euro 2024 against the Netherlands.

But despite the criticism during the tournament, Watkins and England are choosing to block out the noise, with the super sub of Dortmund re-affirming he, and his team-mate will be ready for Spain come Sunday night.

"There’s been a lot of criticism. But at the end of the day, we’re in the final and that’s all that matters," said Watkins.

"We’ve got that bounce-back factor. But it seems to kick us into gear and we never give up. We’ve won on penalties, we come from behind. Now one more game, one more game. Ready for Spain."
