Euro 2024: England fans celebrate Watkins winner on Virgin Voyages cruise

Ollie Watkins said he told Cole Palmer they would combine to score for England before they came off the bench against the Netherlands.

Watkins and Palmer climbed off the bench in the 81st minute with the score locked at 1-1 in the semi-final of Euro 2024 in Dortmund. The Aston Villa striker collected a pass from his fellow substitute in the channel before firing a powerful low shot through Stefan de Vrij's legs and into the bottom corner.

England will now face Spain in the final in Berlin on Sunday following a third straight come-from-behind win in the knockout stages. Watkins has had to be patient for his opportunity at Euro 2024 but is now the England hero.

“Unbelievable,” he told ITV minutes after the final whistle. “I’ve been waiting for that moment for weeks. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get where I am today, grateful that I got the opportunity and I grabbed it with both hands. I’m delighted.”

Watkins then revealed: ”I swear on my life, I swear on my kids’ life, I said to Cole Palmer: 'We’re coming on and you’re going to set me up today'. And that’s why I was so happy.

"I knew as soon as he got the ball he was going to play me and then you’ve got to be greedy: touch and finish. And when I seen it go in the bottom corner… oh my life. Best feeling ever.”

Asked about the constant criticism of England boss Southgate and the side during the tournament, he added: “There’s been a lot of criticism. But at the end of the day, we’re in the final and that’s all that matters.

“We’ve got that bounce-back factor. But it seems to kick us into gear and we never give up. We’ve won on penalties, we come from behind. Now one more game, one more game. Ready for Spain.”

The Netherlands took the lead in the seventh minute when Xavi Simons rifled into the top corner past Jordan Pickford after Declan Rice lost possession. But England hit back 11 minutes later when Harry Kane netted coolly from the penalty spot after a controversial VAR decision.

Kane was kicked by Denzel Dumfries as he shot over the crossbar and the referee changed his decision after being sent to the pitchside monitor. Phil Foden struck the post from longrange and had a shot cleared off the line before Dumfries rattled the crossbar at the other end.

England weathered some Dutch pressure in the second half before Watkins' late show sent them into another Euros final. They will now try to avenge their defeat on penalties by Italy at Wembley in 2021 against the Spanish on Sunday.
