As the 2024/25 campaign approaches, speculation is growing around whether Spain international Dani Olmo will be donning an Arsenal shirt. Olmo has been a standout performer at the 2024 European Championships in Germany, leading the Golden Boot race with three goals and two assists.

His impressive form has helped Spain secure a spot in the final, including a winning goal in the semi-final against France that showcased his skill and finesse.

Olmo’s performances have caught the attention of Arsenal, who see him as a potential key addition to their squad. If he were to join the Gunners, Olmo could provide cover for wingers Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, as well as club captain Martin Ødegaard, who started all but three league matches last season.

Olmo, primarily an attacking midfielder/right-winger for RB Leipzig, has historically played as a central attacking midfielder, similar to Ødegaard’s role at Arsenal. With links between Arsenal and Olmo dating back to the summer of 2019, many are now comparing the two players following Olmo’s stellar Euro 2024 campaign.

Despite playing fewer minutes last season due to injuries, Olmo’s impact was significant. While Ødegaard achieved double digits in both goals and assists, Olmo’s per 90 minutes statistics were comparable, with more goals, assists, and non-penalty goals per game. Olmo also had higher expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) per 90 minutes.

In areas such as shot-creating actions, passing completion, and goal-creating actions, Ødegaard outperformed Olmo. However, Olmo excelled in tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, and his ability to tackle dribblers was notably higher than Ødegaard’s.

Despite their differences, both players contribute defensively, with Ødegaard having more blocks per 90 minutes and Olmo excelling in tackles in the defensive third. However, Olmo’s desire for regular playing time might deter him from a backup role at Arsenal, as he left Barcelona for more minutes, eventually landing at Dinamo Zagreb.

Manager Mikel Arteta remains confident in Ødegaard’s future at Arsenal, praising his progress and leadership. Speaking in April, Arteta emphasised Ødegaard’s potential and impact on the team, stating, “He’s our captain. He’s one of our main players and when you look at the impact he has with us daily, it’s amazing.”

Arteta might consider rotating more frequently next season, with the addition of Olmo allowing for greater squad depth and versatility. Olmo’s presence could solidify Arsenal’s offensive options and enable further rotation without compromising their goalscoring threat.

Arsenal will need to act quickly to secure Olmo, whose €60 million (£50.7 million) release clause at Leipzig offers a clear path for negotiation. This clause expires the day after the Euro 2024 final, meaning the Gunners must move swiftly to land their target.
