Emiliano Martinez was overcome by emotions as Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 to claim their record 14th FA Cup trophy at Wembley on Saturday.

The Argentine keeper has endured a challenging 10-year spell at the club, and after six loan moves, finally got his first real chance in the team after Bernd Leno’s injury during the defeat to Brighton in June.

Martinez has taken the opportunity with both hands and proven to be one of the Gunners’ top performers, saving his side’s blushes on multiple occasions.

The 27-year-old capped off his excellent run of form in the side with a long-awaited trophy and struggled to put into words just how much it meant to him and his family.

‘I can’t really talk,’ an emotional Martinez told the BBC as captain and match-winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived to comfort him.

‘I said to him [Aubameyang] before the game, you’re going to win us the game because you are our captain. And he did it.

Bernd Leno could struggle to get back into the side upon his return from injury next season and Gunners legend Ian Wright is fearful the Argentine won’t want to continue as a No.2 and may be tempted away from the Emirates.

The former England striker told the Kelly and Wrighty Show last week: ‘When you go to a No.2, the first thing you do is worry because you think, “Has he had enough games? Will he be able to deal with the pressure?”

‘Everybody spoke about Emi and how good he is, but I didn’t realise how good he was because I didn’t see enough of him.

‘I saw him in some cup games but he’s commanding, he makes great saves, he’s good on the ground, he’s got everything for a No.2.

‘The thing that frightens me now with him is that when Bernd Leno does come back and he is fit, why would he want to continue as a No.2 when he’s played to this level being a No.1?

‘He will surely want to go and be a No 1 now.’

‘What frightens me is you look at someone like Frank [Lampard] and you look at what Chelsea’s doing, you just say to yourself, “Do you know something? Can we prise him away?”

‘This is what worries me, simply because you look at what he’s done and how he plays, he is better than Kepa now.

‘I think he’s probably better than Bernd Leno if I’m going to be totally honest, from what I’ve seen. I’d be gutted [if Martinez left].’
