Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will not be matching Man City bid for Nathen Ake as Pep looks to fix defensive issues.

Nathan Ake is a former Chelsea youth academy player. The coaches working for the youth team will have a good idea of his capability and his potential.

He is an example of another Chelsea Youth Academy player who has played well for another club. One wonders if it was a good decision to let him leave. Because Ake has been sensational for Bournemouth since signing for them.

Ake had a loan spell at Bournemouth in 2016. The very next season he went on to join the Cherries permanently. He has been one of the key performers for Bournemouth for the past few seasons. And he has been the defensive anchor for the club.

Chelsea on the other hand has had defensive problems of their own. The club has had a hard time finding a pair of center backs who can play consistently with the same intensity. Blame it to injuries or poor form but the Blues have been experimenting with their defense all season long.

Frank Lampard is looking at players to try and add to their team. However, the Blues are not considering to try and resign Ake. They have a buy-back clause in Ake’s contract, which allows them to match an offer from any other team.

Manchester City has also shown interest in Ake. According to Sky Sports, Man City has made a £41M bid to Bournemouth for Ake. And the Cherries have accepted the bid from City. Now Ake and Manchester City will have to come to an agreement and the transfer will be complete.

Why did the Blues decide not to try and bring Ake back

Frank Lampard has to solve the defensive problem for Chelsea. This season Chelsea have conceded 54 goals. That as much as 15th place Brighton. It’s clear that the club needs a new center back. So why not go for Ake.

Frank Lampard does not want to repeat the same English behavior of throwing money at the first option available. Yes, Ake has been great for Bournemouth. But expectations are much higher when you are at a big club like Chelsea.

Chelsea will know about his game much better than any other club. There are many aspects of the game he is good at. Like tackling moving with the ball. But there is a very big weakness in his game.

When it comes to aerial battle Ake is not that convincing. In a list of 50 defenders in the Premier League Ake ranks come at number 49 in terms of aerial duel success percentage.

If you were to include center backs from the top five Leagues in Europe. The list would include 234 player and Ake would be at 221. While Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma will be at 3rd. The numbers clearly show that Ake is very poor in aerial battles.

While Frank Lampard wants his center backs to dominate in aerial balls. This might have been one of the reasons why Chelsea did not decide to opt for Ake.
