Reports suggest under-fire Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will keep his job even if they lose to Liverpool at Old Trafford later this month.

The Times claim United's board are 'determined to be patient' with the Norwegian and have held 'a series of meetings' about transfers next summer.

Solskjaer looked on as his United side stumbled to their third defeat of the season against Newcastle on Sunday, a result that leaves them 12th in the table and just two points off the bottom three, but rumblings from the Old Trafford hierarchy indicate the Norwegian may still be in the United hot-seat should he oversee a defeat to Liverpool .

Solskjaer raised eyebrows this week when he proposed that the upcoming Liverpool clash is ‘perfect’ for his stuttering side but does the United manager have a point?

Liverpool will travel to United on the brink of equalling Manchester City’s 18-game winning streak but will be mindful of the rotten record they possess at Old Trafford.

You have to go back to the 2013/14 season for Liverpool’s last win against United on the road when a rampaging Brendan Rodgers side saw two Steven Gerrard penalties and a Luis Suarez strike ensure the three points went back up the East Lancs Road.

Solskjaer may also welcome back Paul Pogba for the clash after the World Cup winner missed United’s last two games with an ankle injury.

Pogba has been receiving treatment in Dubai during the international break and the Frenchman’s possible return to the starting line up could spell bad news for Liverpool.
